National workshops aim to boost participation in sport
Early in November, state sporting organisations and state departments of sport and recreation participated in National Sport Participation and Integrity Workshops.
The workshops were initiated the Australian Sports Commission (ASC). They focused on ways to get more Australians participating in sport and ways to ensure that those who do play sport find it safe and welcoming.
The workshops have great significance for the many people involved in sports & fitness franchises. Increased sports participation is not only vital to the health and well-being of communities. It also represents a great opportunity for those employed in the sector.
Simon Hollingsworth, CEO of the ASC, believes the workshops were an excellent opportunity to get communities working with the sport sector to achieve these goals.
The workshops provided sporting organisations with the latest views on best practice initiatives.
In addition, participants took a look at barriers which currently prevent groups like women, people with disability, and Indigenous Australians playing more sport. A half-day session was dedicated to the topic of Integrity in sport.
This included information on the latest member protection policies and the ‘Play by the Rules’ program.
‘Play by the Rules’ provides information on how to prevent and deal with discrimination, harassment and child abuse, and develop inclusive and welcoming environments for participation.
Adam Pine, Swimming Australia’s General Manager of Community Sport, Adam Pine is one participant who was impressed by the workshops. He felt they provided vital education that will help his sport grow and protect its members.
“I found the networking with other sports extremely valuable to spark inspiring ideas for ways I can improve my sport and work together with other sports to enact change,” he said.
The workshops also looked at future training options for sports on these topics.
