Generating around $3.06 billion worth of revenue, isn't it time you re-examined ways to trim your waste costs and boost your bottom line instead of the waste industry's.

The old saying one person's trash is another person's treasure rings true with waste. Last year the waste disposal industry generated revenues of $3.06 billion, and while waste costs can be small for many organisations, it's worth looking at ways to trim costs – rather than boost the waste industry's bottom line.

The waste industry in Australia is dominated by a number of multinational players, whose services are typically provided under contract. These contracts, which can run for up to five years, are aggressively protected by the service providers. It is common for contracts to feature an automatic rollover clause, leaving customers unwittingly tied to a long term arrangement.

Reviewing an organisation's waste contract is an essential first step in cutting expenses, though it may not be possible to implement change until contracts expired. Trimming costs doesn't always mean opting for a cheaper service. Simply encourage greater use of recycling (often less costly) or develop a corporate culture of waste reduction.

Other approaches work too. Multi-site operators for example, have the potential to slash waste bills simply by establishing a group contract rather than separate services for each site. Sometimes a change as simple as moving from one size container to another can deliver significant benefits.

Greater use of recycling in an office environment has a dual benefit of saving money as well as a positive environmental impact. As householders we have become more conscious of the need to recycle waste. In offices and manufacturing facilities strategies such as placing paper recycling boxes in office areas, and bottle and can collection bins in canteen areas leads to significant waste reduction. Companies often find that initial steps lead to staff-driven programs to recycle additional items such as toner cartridges, packaging materials, computers or superseded office equipment.

Expense Reduction Analysts uses such strategies – either singly or in combination to save clients up to 50% on their waste disposal costs, according to waste specialist Pam Walker. While there may be nothing glamorous about garbage, these savings glitter like gold.
