Domino’s franchise raises dough for young basketball star

Pizza lovers in Wangaratta can help raise money to support the career of a local Australian paralympic sports star by ordering a pizza from the locally-owned and operated Domino’s Pizza franchise Wangaratta this week.

Twenty-three year old Devin Carracher has been selected to represent Australia at the Word Games of Intellectually Disabled Basketball in Japan next month, and the pizza franchise is helping him raise the money to get there.

From Monday 11 September to Sunday 17 September, the fast food franchise will donate 10 cents from every pizza ordered to help fund Devin’s dream of bringing back gold for his country.

Devin was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was eight years old, but Domino’s Pizza franchise Wangaratta owner Gavin Deas said his condition hadn’t dampened his enthusiasm or love for the game.

“Standing at a height of 200cm, Devin is naturally suited to the sport,” Mr Deas said.

“Captain of the Victorian Country Intellectually Disabled Basketball team, Devin led his team to victory in the national tournament earlier this year, and I have no doubt he can do it again.”

Mr Deas said he hoped local residents would dig deep to help raise money to support such a worthy cause.

“This is the story of a young man who has overcome many obstacles to pursue his dream of representing Australia on the basketball courts,” he said.

“His enthusiasm, dedication, passion and skill in his field make him the perfect role mode. He is an inspiration to us all, and I am sure he will make Wangaratta and the rest of Australia proud in Japan.”

Locally owned and operated, the Domino’s franchise and its franchisees have 444 stores across Australia and New Zealand, employing more than 11,000 casual and full-time staff and making more than 40 million pizzas each year.
