Case Study 1 – Building an Empire of Dough

Craig Birchall, 46
Multi-Unit franchisee
Domino’s Carlton, Flemington, Malvern & St Kilda, VIC

Prior to joining Domino’s in late 2004, I completed a Hotel Management degree in Sydney before travelling overseas to the UK and Europe where I worked for a number of years in the Hotel Hospitality Industry. Upon returning to Australia I opened a number of restaurants near the southern highland in NSW before becoming a foodservice consultant for a number of well known companies including; Unilever, Goodman Fielder, Nestle, Australian Meat and Live Stock and the Australian Port Corporation. In 1995, I made the move to Melbourne to start up a sou vide manufacturing business for Competitive Foods and this is where my Domino’s life began.

When I began looking to invest in a new challenge, Domino’s had just arrived in Melbourne and were looking for franchisees, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. I began thinking about starting a new opportunity then decided I wanted to operate within a franchise system as I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel. After completing my due diligence, Domino’s offered a complete package in marketing, advertising, operational support and had a proven system.

I focused on my business, delivering hot, quality pizzas, faster than the opposition and pioneered a community based scholarship initiative through local schools to assist under privileged children.

Five years on, I now own four stores and hope to purchase more in the future. As a franchisee I enjoy establishing Domino’s as a successful brand in the Melbourne market and building a devoted and trustworthy team in my stores. The support Domino’s Head Office provides is priceless; they listen to our needs and are dedicated to helping grow our business, market share and customer counts.

Case Study 2 – A slice of country hospitality

Michelle Burow, 27
Single store franchisee
Domino’s Kingaroy, QLD

Prior to joining Domino’s I worked as a Site Manager for a BP Service Station and before that a Shift Supervisor for various Coles supermarket stores. After years of working for other people I realised I could either work hard for myself and reap the benefits or work hard for someone else and not receive any benefits. Once I came to the realisation the choice was clear for me, I wanted to run my own business and be my own boss.

When I started looking into franchising my only Domino’s experience had ever been as the customer. It took me two years of looking at all the different franchises available before I came across Domino’s. I had just ordered pizza for dinner and was sitting back relaxing; loving the fact I had no dishes or dirty kitchen to clean up. When I went to throw the box in the bin I noticed the Franchise Opportunity Available ad on the side of the box, after investigating what being a Domino’s franchisee entailed I knew it was the right business for me.

Since purchasing the store I have become a keen benefactor for countless local community groups. Locally owned and operated, I strongly believe in giving back to the community which has chosen Domino’s as their number one pizza provider and lending a helping hand where I can. It’s about being in touch and understanding the people who live and work in the community you operate in.  If you are not involved in your local community, then how can you get to know your customers?

My store has become well known for our sponsorship of the Kingaroy Junior Small Sided Soccer Carnival. With our sponsorship it went from being approx 40 players to 40 seven player teams. At the event we sold almost 300 personal pizzas in less than four hours and all players received a Domino’s participation medallion and goodie bag. The smiles on the little ones faces, who were probably getting their first medal, was priceless. Appreciation was evident from all clubs and players who took part on the day and I was being called Mrs Domino’s by the end of the day.

Domino’s supports my store a little differently than a city store. My Regional Managers aren't just 30 min away, they are 3 hours away. However I know they are always only a phone call away, if or when any problems arise. The IT support I receive is a godsend, it’s great to speak to someone instantly and know that nine times out of ten they can fix the problem over the phone. Domino’s is a strong well-known brand, who operates a proven system which provides me all the training and support I need to make my store the best it can be.

What I enjoy most about being a franchisee is waking up every morning having the security of a well known brand name behind me. At the end of the day, what more could I ask for from a franchise? Being a Domino’s franchisee I get piece of mind as well as being able to work for a fun, fast paced company and reap the benefits of my hard work.
