Shifting franchisee demographics see families sign on to franchise with Battery World

Husband and wife team, Howdie and Ruth Farrar reap the benefits of running Battery World's Ipswich retail franchise together

A dramatic shift in Battery World franchisee demographics has seen over half of the retail franchises’ 77 stores either owned or operated by a mix of family teams, including couples, brothers or parents and their sons or daughters.

The changing face of franchisees has occurred over recent years with a further 10% rise in the average number of enquiries from families and couples in the past six months alone, said Battery World General Manager, John Pascoe.

"People are drawn to Battery World due to the familiarity and simplicity of battery retailing.

“Add to this our visible dedication to communities, our strong franchising system and support network and the enticing lifestyle prospects of starting a franchise with those you are closest to, and it's easy to see why so many families are willing to jump on board," said Pascoe.

Howdie Farrar, owner of Battery World’s Ipswich retail franchise runs the outlet with his wife, Ruthie who left long-held positions in the armed forces to pursue a more stable and relaxed lifestyle.

He says the benefits of running a business with a family member or significant other drastically outweighs the drawbacks.

"When it comes to running a franchise, you only get out what you put in.

“Battery World gives you all the tools you need to be successful – but it’s up to you to put in the hard yards.

“Being part of a team makes that easier," said Howdie.

"I can understand people would have reservations about going into business with those closest to them – but any couple or family can do it so long as they set boundaries and respect each other.

“That's been the secret to our success, and to be honest, I wouldn't have it any other way," he said.

Howdie and Ruthie have been awarded the franchise's highest accolades in the two years since opening their Ipswich Battery World retail franchise. Maintaining enviable growth figures, the couple have plans to expand within the Ipswich area.

"We love what we do and we love each other," said Howdie.

"What greater success is there than that?"
