The Bakers Delight franchise couple go north
For Melbourne’s Roy and Natalie Glassey, the food from the Bakers Delight franchise was the only bread they ever bought, so when it came to purchasing their own bakery franchise and raising some dough – it was the Bakers Delight franchise, of course.
Roy, a qualified baker who worked at the baking franchise and his wife who worked at Europcar, wanted to purchase their own business so they could spend more time with their two daughters and establish a strong financial future with the Bakers Delight franchise.
When they couldn’t decide on the right bakery franchise in Victoria, the Glasseys relocated to Brisbane to work in the Bakers Delight franchise in Burunda in 2002, but it wasn’t to be all “sun-drenched” beaches to begin with.
“Living in Brisbane was like another country, the relaxed nature of people, the beach culture and not much coverage of our beloved Collingwood football team!
“Unlike Roy I had never worked in a bakery and in the first six months I had so much to learn in terms of staffing, accounts, marketing and just getting to know customers was a challenge,” Natalie said, of her baking franchise.
The Glasseys managed the Buranda bakery franchise for two years before becoming proud owners in January 2004.
“Once we finally bought the bakery franchise and achieved our dream of running our own business, things just fell into place and all the hard work became worthwhile.
“Through the bakery we’ve now met some great friends who also happen to be loyal customers and there’s even a few Collingwood supporters from back home in Melbourne,” Natalie said, of her baking franchise.
Roy and Natalie have been blessed with great staff and even have their two daughters, Laura 13 and Danielle 8, helping out on weekends at the Bakers Delight franchise.
Danielle keeps things festive at the bakery franchise by handing out balloons to customers on weekends and Laura shows her true colours by wearing her Collingwood jersey, much to the dismay of Brisbane Lion fans who frequent the baking franchise.
“We have a great team at the bakery franchise and staff turnover is extremely low, our current bakery manager was at the store when we arrived in 2002 and an apprentice baker who we employed three years ago is doing extremely well,” Natalie said, in regards to the Bakers Delight franchise.
Passionate about their baker franchise, the Glassey’s recently partnered with their local primary school in the inaugural Bakers Delight franchise Sack Race achieving great results.
“On the actual day of the sack race the heavens opened up but that didn’t dampen the kids spirits – the event was moved indoors and we had Bakers Delight’s mascot ’Breadhead’ visit the students.
“It was great to see kids having so much fun exercising and days after the event parents were still discussing the sack race in the bakery,” Natalie said, about the sack race supported by the Bakers Delight franchise.
Roy and Natalie’s tip for interested bakery franchisees:
“Be passionate about your business and get involved in your local community. Be prepared to learn everyday and where possible share the demands of the business from baking to closing.”
