Deb Raby, franchisee with Appliance Tagging Services
Ex-navy electrician and mother of four, Deb has recently become an Appliance Tagging Services franchisee.
Deb packed up her home, ex-policeman and ex-navy husband Brendan and family, moved from sunny Queensland to Tasmania, via Melbourne to complete the home services franchise induction training.
"There were three factors that motivated us. The business is familiar and safe, given my experience as an electrician. The franchisor was passionate and very helpful. And finally, it gave us the opportunity to come home to Tasmania. So it was definitely an opportunity for us.
"The five year plan is to have employees, so being passionate and selling ourselves is important. In this business you need to know what you are doing but it's more than that. You need to have aptitude with a positive attitude - you need to show people that you are credible and capable.
"I get comments like 'Oh you're a female electrician!' all the time and I always reply with 'Yes! I am!' A lot of people are surprised. Nothing negative, just surprised. I think people find it easier to deal with me as I'm a franchisee.
"I left a known job with a secure income. But I am a tradesperson and I know my abilities will always be needed. You need to have courage. Just give it a go! If you have the opportunity to do it, my goodness go for it!"
