The hard facts about Your environment – My environment
Shock 1
On average, Australian households spend $1,500 - $2,000 on energy bills every year.
The real shock is that roughly 90% of that energy is generated by burning fossil fuels such as coal. All that Coal Burn creates greenhouse gas pollution which contributed to global warming and climate change. A tonne of greenhouse gas would fill a family home and an average Australian household emits about eight tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide each year. This is more than twice as much as the average family car emits.
Shock 2
Australians are among the highest water users in the world. Nationwide, households are the second largest user of mains water after agriculture. Water usage around the home accounts for around 70% of major cities total water consumption.
Shock 3
Australians are the second highest waste producers in the world, throwing away 3.3 million tonnes of food a year, the equivalent of a quarter of the nation’s food supply.
So what can be done?
In most cases, making simple changes at home and doing simple things can account for up to 40% savings of energy consumption in the home. Some easy ways to make a difference include:
- Wash clothes in cold water
- Avoid using a clothes dryer and air/sunlight dry clothes wherever possible
- Use the energy-saving settings on your dishwasher or wash by hand & air-dry dishes
- Choose appliances with a high energy star rating – the more stars, the more energy efficient it is
- Install a solar hot water system or Heat Pump and benefit from the government rebates now on offer
- Save power and have a skylight or two installed in darker areas of the home
- Change to energy efficient light bulbs
- Turn off lights when leaving a room
- Switch off appliances at the power point instead of leaving them on “stand-by” especially the washer and dryer
In short by simply Turning off, Backing off (Thermometer settings), using efficient appliances, having Ceiling Batts fitted and changing electric hot water unit to a heat pump or solar unit, average homes can save 50 – 65 % off the current energy bill. That could mean an extra $1000 saving this year (at a time when most people could really use it.)
