AllSafe Franchising reports on ‘Green Loans’ that are soon to be available to all

Last year the Minister for the environment, the Hon. Peter Garrett announced that home owners will soon have access to an interest free ‘Green Loan’. These green loans are set to assist with improving the energy and water efficiency of their homes.

“Green loans will provide people with easy access to practical household improvements that combined could reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 600,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent every year,” Mr Garrett said.

Under this new Green Loan scheme, up to 200,000 working families will be entitled for loans of up to $10,000 specifically for the installation of solar, water and energy efficient products in their homes.

The green loans can be used for solar power and hot water, updating old fridges and air-conditioners to new energy efficient models, home window tinting, natural lighting (skylights), upgrade toilets, tapware and shower roses, even stoves and hotplates can be upgraded.

The green loans are expected to be available some time in 2009 and will run over 5 years. It is anticipated that upon a homeowner applying for a ‘Green Loan’, a sustainability assessment will be performed to establish the most effective approach to improving the energy efficiency of the home with recommendations provided by an accredited Thermal Performance Assessor.

There will be further public announcements regarding these ‘Green Loans’ soon so home owners are advised to keep their eyes and ears open if they are planning to reduce their carbon footprint and save on energy and water bills.
