Supanews is the only collection of franchised newsagencies in Australia. With 41 stores operating in New South Wales and Queensland, Supanews is keen to further expand its empire across Australia through franchising.
Andrew Pedley bought his Mt Druit
business services franchise in NSW. Owning his own business was a life ambition for Andrew, although he previously thought owning a newsagency would be beyond his capabilities. With the support of both his wife Ruth and Supanews, it has become a reality.
Andrew explains his background: “I worked in IT for 19 years and enjoyed most of my career, but towards the end I was looking for something more - something I could say I built for myself with hard work.
“When I started looking at businesses I didn’t think that buying a newsagency would be achievable, until I saw the opportunity at Supanews. When Ruth and I met with Supanews and looked at the proposition, it just felt right.”
Andrew largely credits the assistance and encouragement from Supanews for the success of his business: “It is thanks to the support we have received from Supanews that the business has grown to where it is.
“Supanews provides assistance, whether it be answering a simple question about an operational matter, or instigating a change in available product. I have always found them quick to answer any questions we have or address changes we require.
"Running any newsagency is hard work, and owning a Supanews is no different in that regard. You get out of it what you are prepared to put in. Supanews have processes that help you run your business efficiently, meaning you don’t waste time on unnecessary matters.
“I always feel like there is back-up if I need help. Supanews is there and willing to ensure I have every chance to make a success of my business. Supanews also brings something that most independent newsagents don’t have access to - group buying power and supplier funded promotions, both of which drive sales growth.
“If you're keen to own your own business, franchising is definitely a good introduction. The formula has already been tried and tested with the systems, procedures and strategies available to you,” says Andrew.
Andrew recommends that prospective franchises do their homework before deciding on purchasing a business: “Talk to some of the existing franchisees so you understand what you are in for. Make sure you are prepared to put in the hours and have sufficient funding for initial working capital after your purchase.
“It's hard work, but very rewarding. I love being a part of the local community and hearing feedback from our customers. It's important to get a buzz from what you do. Ruth and I are very proud of what we have achieved as Supanews franchisees.
