The Elite Football Squad from Aquinas College will receive a visit from a dietician and a specially prepared healthy lunch as part of National Nutrition Week from October 16th-22nd, 2005.
On Friday the 21st of October, 36 students from the Elite Football Squad will learn first hand about the role food plays in the body’s development from local accredited practising dietician, Kaye Haslam.
“National Nutrition surveys have found that Australian children are not eating enough fruit and vegetables and it is vital for growth and development that school aged children receive the right nutrients,” Ms Haslam said.
“This year’s motto for National Nutrition Weeks is ‘get the edge with fruit and veg’ and it’s very important that growing bodies eat the recommended number of serves of fruit and vegetables each day.”
Fruit and vegetables provide a wide range of nutrients including antioxidants, Vitamins A, C and E, folate, potassium, iron, fibre and water.
Aquinas College Physical Education Coordinator, Brett Davidson, said the students, aged from 12 to 17, were keen to improve their performance on the field by learning about how to maintain a balanced diet.
“The Elite Football Squad is looking forward to learning about how best to maintain
healthy eating habits and the boys are especially eager to enjoy the healthy food supplied by
Trios Eastlands,” Mr Davidson said.
Healthy food group, Trios, will participate in National Nutrition Week by supplying a variety of healthy Laffé Wraps and Salads to the members of the Elite Football Squad, to demonstrate that healthy food is not only good for growing bodies, but can also taste great.
“It is important for athletes to establish healthy eating behaviours at a young age so they can maintain a balanced diet throughout their lifetime,” Ms Haslam said.
Several schools from around Melbourne will participate in the initiative as past of National Nutrition Week.
