According to Diana Williams, founder and executive chair of
Fernwood Women’s Health Club, small businesses can offer women better opportunities of promotion and greater success than a corporate career.
“It is difficult for women to break through the male dominated area of corporate business. I believe this may be why so many women start up small businesses and franchising is an excellent option for them to consider,” Williams said.
Williams also believes that franchising can help to alleviate the financial burden of starting up a small business.
“Women are often reluctant to put the family assets at risk in pursuing their own business goals. Without willingness to provide equity as security, financing expansion is difficult.
Franchising is an ideal solution. Finance is provided by the franchise owners and so there is less need to obtain huge amounts of finance through the banks,” Williams said. Williams does warn women entering into franchising about the dangers of taking on too much.
“Multi-tasking does come naturally (to women) but sometimes we do tend to take on too much. Juggling the needs of a family and a growing business can be very demanding and so strict time management needs to be adopted so she can focus on the family when at home and the business when she’s at work and on herself for at least a small portion of the day,” Williams said.
