AGAINST the odds Byford local Damien Stephens is hoping to become a karting champion and has earned the respect and support of his community, workplace and local sporting associations.
Damien has achieved more than many people his age while living with a congenital disorder he was born with which affects his hands.
The 20-year-old’s courage and determination has not gone unnoticed by WA barbecue and fried chicken franchise chain
CHOOKS fresh & tasty which is supporting Damien with a $1,000 sponsorship.
The company’s Chief Chook Mr Steve Hansen said CHOOKS
fast food franchise was proud to sponsor Damien as he pursued his passion.
“At CHOOKS we view our involvement in the local community as a fundamental part of our business and we believe it’s important to put back into the community that supports us,” he said.
“The entire franchise group is excited to support Damien in his goal to attain WA Karting Champion. He has already achieved so much in the sport having won many junior titles and reached Reserve Champion for his class.”
Damien said he began delving into go-karting for fun when he was only seven years old but was now taking the sport more seriously and aiming to become the WA Kart Champion.
“I entered my first club race at the beginning of 2008,” he said. “I have competed nine races and thanks to CHOOKS
chicken franchise I will be taking part in the races left in the remainder of the 2008 season.
“The sponsorship from CHOOKS goes towards the running costs of the go-kart and any breakages or repairs.
“It might not seem like it but when repairing a go-kart the costs can quickly mount up. For example a new set of tyres cost around $250.”
On top of his involvement in karting Damien has been a support crew member for a contender in the V8 Super Cars and he has volunteered for the Black Rock Stakes which raises funds for handicapped people through cycling events.
He is currently in his fourth year as an apprentice Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic for Skippers Trucks and intends to further his career in management.
