Service industries to the American motor market adapted this technology
to develop a mobile paint laboratory service so individual operators
could take this technical repair system to the customer. The demand for
this service had been growing at a fast rate as motor car resellers
realised the savings in paint and bumper bar repair work could be
obtained through a highly efficient mobile repair service. Not only
were they spending less dollars on these types of repairs, the work was
being carried out on their premises.
Fred Hawken from the Gold Coast Queensland realised the enormous
potential of this service to the Australian motor industry and, in
conjunction with Boyd Starkey, established a combined paint, plastic and
bumper repair service on the Gold Coast of Queensland in 1992. Fred and
Boyd working with Australian paint and material specialists enhanced and
improved the technology to suit Australian conditions. The business was
based on quality workmanship, reliable service and fair pricing. Their
success with their specifically developed methods and scientifically
prepared formulas, soon became well known and their work was in great
demand. After further research into bumper bar material technology this
repair service was streamlined and broadened to include repairs to other
plastic type materials used in different car components. The mobile
process was then complete offering the service of quality reliability
and value unrivalled by any other operator.
The next step was to develop a mobile repair franchising system that would allow other
operators the opportunity of owning a Touch Up Guys automotive repair franchise. Fred and
Boyd sold their Gold Coast territories to allow them the time to
concentrate on this development.
A very comprehensive operators manual was written covering each process,
step by step, of the paint matching and bumper repair system. An
extensive review of the equipment used for the process was undertaken,
with many manufacturers developing according to The Touch Up Guys
special requirements. The mobile laboratory and workshop layout was
developed from practical experience and ensures an efficient and quick
operation which is essential to support the quality and reliability of
work consistent with The Touch Up Guys philosophy.
A detailed training program was developed and thoroughly tested before
mobile franchising could begin. This program needed to transfer the
technological information and the work know how of The Touch Up Guys
system. This program covers all aspects of the mobile repair franchise - technical,
practical and administration and also covers the presentation, promotion
and selling of the service.
The continual research and development of new methods is conducted at
The Touch Up Guys Training & Research Centre on the Gold Coast. This
makes The Touch Up Guys a very well rounded business catering to all
needs of vehicle restoration.
